Question: What is swing speed, why is it important and how can I improve it?

Answer:
Swing speed is an important way to increase the length of your shot. Tiger Woods swings the club at 120mph and Annika Sorenstam at well over 100mph. Their club efficiency combined with solid ball strike in the center of the clubface has led to longer drives. For example, if you swing at 100mph and hit ½” off the center of the face, your ball may come off the face at 135mph. However, if you hit the center of the clubface, the ball will come off even faster at about 150mph resulting in 20-40 yards of increased distance.

Although swing speed does help a golfer hit the ball further, it is not the most important action for improving length of your swing. Hitting the ball in the center of the clubface is the most important action you can take to hit the golf ball farther. To hit the ball in the center of the clubface, you must have the proper body mechanics and a Driver that fits your swing. This will help you hit the ball in the center and achieve the correct ball flight for the longest possible shot.

Swing speed and more efficient mechanics can be increased through golf fitness, and the correct equipment. Try working with a PGA professional and a Golf Fitness professional to help you improve these areas. Performing explosive, high-energy exercises will train your body to rotate faster while maintaining balance and stability. With proper exercises aimed at increasing swing speed and mechanics, you will see your ball fly further and your game improve - allowing you to have a lot more fun!
